AI in Teacher Education

In light of current technological developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), new competencies are required that have not yet been sufficiently integrated into teacher education. As part of an interdisciplinary doctoral program Research on AI-Related Competencies of (Prospective) Teachers at the Professional School of Education, the project’s aim is to develop a pedagogical concept for fostering media education competence among pre-service teachers, focusing on AI.

The project follows a design-based research approach. On this basis, a pedagogical concept is developed in a theory-driven and iterative manner, implemented in school pedagogy courses, and empirically evaluated regarding the achievement of objectives.

In the associated advanced courses in school pedagogy, pre-service teachers explore, for example, the significance of artificial intelligence in the everyday lives of children and adolescents, gain insights into the technical underpinnings of large language models, and become familiar with theoretical approaches to media education. Building on this, participants develop and reflect on interdisciplinary pedagogical concepts designed to foster AI-related competencies in students.
