Media Education Project at a Secondary School (Mittelschule) in Gerbrunn

06/26/2026

During the summer semester 2026, initial teacher education students at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg developed lesson designs on media education and implemented them as part of a media education project at Eichendorff Secondary School (Mittelschule) in Gerbrunn. The project built on the successful practical cooperation with secondary schools (Realschulen) in Lower Franconia and contributed to the further dissemination of media education in school practice.

As part of an advanced course in school pedagogy led by Tamara Baumann, research assistant and PhD candidate at the Chair of School Pedagogy at Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg, initial teacher education students explored innovative media such as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality as well as various aspects of media education during the summer semester 2026. The aim of the course was to develop and implement lesson designs on learning about media, focusing on topics such as antisemitism and the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

The developed lesson designs were implemented on 25 June 2026 during a three-hour media education project at Eichendorff Secondary School (Mittelschule) in Gerbrunn in the district of Würzburg. The implementation was supported by Andreas Sandweger, Media Pedagogy Advisor for Digital Education (mBdB) for the districts of Main-Spessart and the city of Würzburg and teaching practice supervisor.

The initial teacher education students implemented their lesson designs in three groups and observed each other’s lessons to provide peer feedback. In addition, the participating pupils completed a questionnaire to provide feedback on the lessons and on what they had learned. The cooperation between Eichendorff Secondary School (Mittelschule) in Gerbrunn, the  mBdB, and the Chair of School Pedagogy was regarded as highly beneficial by all those involved.
